An item selection system (100) includes a first menu (140) projected in a first menu space (130) of a viewing surface (100a). The first menu (140) has a first plurality of items (105-125) and a cursor (190) adapted for movement amongst the first plurality of items (105-125) and for selecting a particular item (100) from the first plurality of items (105-125). The selection system (100) also includes a second menu (145) projected in a second menu space (135) of the viewing surface, such that the first menu (140) and the second menu (145) are simultaneously displayed in the viewing surface (100a). Specifically, the second menu space (135) is positioned adjacent to the first menu space (130). Moreover, the second menu (145) has a second plurality of items (110a-110f) associated with the particular item (110), such that when the cursor (190) selects the particular item (110), the second menu (145) replaces the first menu (140) in the first menu space (130). In an embodiment, when the cursor (190) selects the particular item (110), a third menu replaces the second menu (145) in the second menu (135). Specifically, the third menu has a third plurality of items, and the third plurality of items is associated with one of the second plurality of items (110a-110f).
