ABSTRACT A detector for determining when an occlusion has occurred in the fluid line of an IV administration set comprises means associated with an IV infusion pump to determine the resistive force exerted by fluid in the line against the pumping mechanism of the pump. The detector includes a flexible beam which is mounted between the plunger and the activator of the pumping mechanism and which bends proportionately to the magnitude of the resistive force. A strain gauge attached to the beam activates an alarm which stops the IV pump when flexure of the beam indicates an occlusion in the line has occurred. PAT:10700-02
