A device for splitting wood for fuel comprises a body and attaching member and fastener. The device is designed to be mounted on a manually operated mechanical jack; the precise descriptive, jack-axe, is used to differentiate the device from other known woodsplitting devices. The body has two planar faces, the surfaces and profile boundaries of which describe a solid. The surfaces converge toward each other to describe a narrow lower boundary or blade edge which creates an advantage for the body in its preferred operation of penetrating and splitting cut wood for fuel. The attaching member is joined to the body and protrudes from an edge adjacent to the blade edge. Thus, the device can be attached to the beam of a jack and its position adjusted in a sliding manner to accommodate the size of wood to be split; the blade edge pointing toward the lifting member of the jack. Wood to be split is placed against the beam of the jack, between the lifting member and the device, with a grain splitting direction parallel to the beam. Operating the jack handle causes the lifting member of the jack to push the wood into the body of the device thereby splitting the wood in a controlled deliberate effort.
