In a coupling mechanism for a tractor trailer combination, a Jackknife prevention device consisting of; a main plate which is free to rotate about the king pin and held in position by a snap ring and a washer, a coupling wedge which transmits the torque exerted by the fifth wheel to the main plate and is attached firmly to the underside of the mainplate, a mainplate which acts as a sheave wheel, cables which operate a hydraulic cylinder, a set of grooved pulleys reducing the amount of travel required by the hydraulic cylinder, two fluid velocity sensing lock-up valves and a shut off valve which allows the hydraulic fluid to by-pass the two fluid velocity sensing loch-up valves.
