According to the invention, application developers separate their Web application into two layers: a highly distributed edge layer and a centralized origin layer. In a representative embodiment, the edge layer supports a servlet container that executes a Web tier (304), typically the presentation layer of a given Java-based application. Where necessary, the edge layer communicates with code running on an origin server to respond to a given request.
Selon le mode de réalisation décrit dans la présente invention, les concepteurs d'application divisent leur application web en deux couches: une couche frontière extrêmement répartie et une couche d'origine centrale. Dans un mode de réalisation représentatif, la couche frontière contient un conteneur de servlet Java qui exécute une architecture multiniveau web (304), en général, la couche de représentation d'une application Java donnée. Lorsque c'est nécessaire, la couche frontière communique avec un code en cours sur un serveur d'origine afin de répondre à une demande donnée.
