ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A furnace includes combustion chambers having burners to which are supplied fuel and air under pressure. Below the combustion chambers is an elongate furnace chamber separated from the overlying combustion chambers by refractory plates which have a plurality of equally dimensioned and spaced through holes. The pressure of the supplied air, the diameter of the holes and the distance between the plates and strip stock which is passed through the furnace chamber is closely controlled so that combustion is essentially completed in the combustion chamber and the combustion products are directed in jets through the holes on to the strip stock at which location the essentially laminar flow of the jets becomes turbulent. The stock is thus heated by radiation from the apertured plates and by convection.
