ABSTRACT A grinding jig for use in the near-freehand sharpening of a variety of carving or turning tools of an elongate form and having a cutting edge at one end and a handle at the other. The jig comprises a tool-holder for clamping and holding the tool while it is being ground, a support pedestal, post or the like for mounting to a fixture and a universal-joint connecting the post or pedestal to the tool-holder in such a way that (when the grinding jig is in use) the edge of the tool may be simultaneously turned about an axis substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the tool, swung from side-to-side and tilted up and down while the cutting edge is held against the grinding wheel.
