ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention relates to the joining of optical fibre cables. The ends of two optical fibres being joined together must be very precisely aligned in order to minimize losses, at the coupling or joint in the signal being trans- mitted by the channel which comprises the two coupled fibres. Various connections and joining methods are known for effecting such precise alignment, but in general they are expensive and intricate and require an operator having a high degree of skill. The present invention provides an optical fibre cable joint comprising one or more pairs of coupled optical fibres, the or each pairs of coupled optical fibres being aligned by two, and only two, elongated elements having cylindrical outer surfaces. The two elements have their axis parallel and their two cylindrical surfaces in contact along their lengths to define an elongated bicuspid interstice, the pair of coupled optical fibres having their end portions disposed in and ex- tending in opposite directions along their interstice, each optical fibre end portion being in contact with both cylindrical surfaces. The fibres are located and aligned by the two adjacent cylindrical surface only, that is to say without any assistance from the third cylindrical surface, thereby avoiding the disadvantage that the fibres must all contact the three surfaces, which requires very close dimensional tolerances.
