ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An improved jump rope (10) comprises a length of rope (16), a pair of handles (12, 14), one secured at either end (111, 145) of the rope (16), one of the handles (12) incorporating a power source (42), a circuit (150) for generating an audio signal, and a switch (60) for selectively connecting the power source (42) to the circuit (150) for generating the audio signal. In a preferred embodiment, one of several different audio signals may be selected via switches (74, 76, 78, 80), each audio signal comprises music, and the tempo of the selected music signal is adjustable via a thumbwheel (82), the switches (74, 76, 78, 80) and thumbwheel (82) being disposed on the handle (12) for manipulation by the user as jumping continues.
