The present invention embodies a method and an injector adapted to incorporate this method, for keeping a patient's vein open during an intravenous contrast injector procedure without injecting a saline solution from a separate syringe. The injector includes a controller having a programable software module to allow an operator to configure the injector to push some contrast media fluid through an injection site and then retract a plunger drive ram. A syringe is adapted to allow a patient's blood pressure to move the syringe plunger back towards its starting position, thus enabling a patient's blood to pass through the injection site. Alternatively, the syringe is adapted with an elastic plunger which as it enlarges and contracts facilitates fluid communication through the injection site. Additionally, the plunger drive ram can be adapted to gradually pull as well as push the plunger, thereby causing fluid to flow across the injection site.

L'invention concerne un procédé et un injecteur mettant en oeuvre ce procédé. Le procédé de l'invention assure le maintien d'une veine ouverte pendant une procédure d'injection de contraste par voie intraveineuse sans injection de solution saline à partir d'une seringue séparée. L'injecteur comprend un contrôleur possédant un module logiciel programmable qui permet à un utilisateur de configurer l'injecteur de façon que ce dernier pousse un liquide de type produit de contraste dans un site d'injection puis rétracte un élément d'entraînement de piston. Une seringue est conçue pour permettre à la pression sanguine du patient de remettre le piston de la seringue en position initiale, ce qui permet au sang du patient de passer dans le site d'injection. En variante, la seringue comprend un piston élastique qui, à mesure qu'il s'agrandit et se contracte, facilite la communication fluidique dans le site d'injection. En outre, l'élément d'entraînement du piston peut être conçu pour tirer et pousser progressivement le piston, ce qui permet de faire circuler le liquide sur toute la surface du site d'injection.
