Disclosed are compounds of the formula 1 (see formula 1) and to pharmaceutically acceptable salts, prodrugs, and solvates thereof wherein X1 is O, -CR4R5 or -NR4; R1 is H or optionally substituted alkyl; R2 is -(CR4R5)n-heterocycle or -(CR4R5)n aryl where n is 0 to 6; R4 and R5 are each H, alkyl etc.; R8 is H, alkylcarbonyl benzyl, benzyloxycarbonyl or trialkylsilyl; R9 is H, alkyl, alkenyl or alkynyl; and R10 is Cl, Br, I, F or CN. The compounds of formula 1 are antibacterial and antiprotozoal agents that may be used to treat various bacterial and protozoal infections and disorders related to such infections.
