A key safe (100) having an outer housing (10) for housing a key (9), a releasable mounting assembly (3, 7, 8), an electronic code entry pad (4), and activation circuitry is disclosed. Alternatively, the outer housing (10) is for housing not a key, but a lever (60) for opening a lock directly. The releasable mounting assembly (3, 7, 8) releaseably mounts the outer housing (10) to a mounting surface so that the outer housing may be completely removed from the mounting surface upon entry of an electronic code (4), for maintenance purposes. The releasable opening assembly permits access to the interior region of the outer housing (10) when an electronic code (4) is entered, to allow access to the key (9) inside the housing (10).
