In a key telephone system, control circuitry is responsive to input key data from a key telephone for determining whether the telephone is of a first type or of a second type. If the key telephone is determined to be of the first type, the input key data is then processed and display data is sent to the key telephone. If the key telephone is determined to be of the second type, the input key data is converted, then processed, and the display data is converted and sent to the key telephone. According to the processed key data, a connection is established between a subscriber line and the key telephone.
