A keypad (115, 200, 300, 400) is described herein in which the keypad (115, 200, 300, 400) can have a base surface (120, 205, 305, 405) and a plurality of keys (125, 210, 310, 410) positioned on the base surface (120, 205, 305, 405). The plurality of keys (125, 210, 310, 410) can be made up of a first group (130, 215, 315, 415) that is an arrangement of number keys (135, 220, 320, 420) for initiating a voice-based communication and a second group (140, 225, 325, 425) that is an arrangement of letter keys (145, 230, 330, 430). In addition, the number keys (135, 220, 320, 420) of the first group (130, 215, 315, 415) and the letter keys (145, 230, 330, 430) of the second group (140, 225, 325, 425) are independent of one another. As an example, the number keys (135, 220, 320, 420) of the first group (130, 215, 315, 415) can be positioned on the base surface (120, 205, 305, 405) in a number of columns (150, 335), and the letter keys (145, 230, 330, 430) of the second group (140, 225, 325, 425) can be positioned in areas between the number keys (135, 220, 320, 420).
