A real-time process and apparatus for controlling conditions in a lumber drying kiln include measuring the shrinkage of a sample of the lumber across the longitudinal axis of the lumber and over time. A slope of the curve is analyzed and can be used to determine when a stress peak and stress reversal occurs in the lumber sample. The detection of the stress peak indicates that the drying schedule of the kiln should be incremented to the next drying step. According to the invention, the schedule is incremented in the fastest possible way without degrading the quality of the lumber.

Il s'agit d'un procédé en temps réel et d'un appareil pour contrôler les conditions dans un four de séchage du bois de construction comportant la lecture du rétrécissement d'un échantillon de bois de construction sur son axe longitudinal et au cours d'une période de temps. Une pente de la courbe est analysée et peut servir à déterminer le moment où est atteinte une pointe de stress et le moment où se produit une inversion du stres dans l'échantillon. La détection de la pointe de stress signale que le cycle de séchage doit être porté à sa prochaine étape. Par cette invention, le cycle est augmenté le plus rapidement possible sans que la qualité du bois n'en souffre.
