TITLE OF THE INVENTION KNIFE FOR ULTRAMICROTOMY OF .alpha.-ALUMINA SINGLE CRYSTAL ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention provides a knife for ultramicrotomy of .alpha.-alumina single crystal whose edge is so sharp and so smooth as to be able to slice off, by the ultramicrotomy with the knife, ultrathin sections having no knife mark in such a size as may interfere the electron microscopy thereof, and whose edge is also so durable that the edge can slice off the ultrathin sections suitable for electron microtomy even after at least several hundreds' sections were sliced off. The knife comprises a block of .alpha.-alumina single crystal having an edge formed at the intersecting end of two faces, the edge having substantially no flow detectable by the microscopy of at least about 800 magnifications. The knife is produced by subjecting two faces forming the edge to a mechanical and a mechanochemical polishing, and then a chemical polishing until the edge becomes to have substantially no flaw detectable by the microscopy of at least 800 magnifications on the whole edgeline.
