ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A new type of hand-operated knitting machine having a device for reading knitting programs is provided. Unlike the conventional reading device-equipped knitting machine, the reading device is not mounted on its carriage. Therefore, although the scanning operation of the reading device is associated with the start of the carriage move- ment, it is not disordered by irregular car?iage handlings, thus realising proper reproduction of the knitting pattern.
