Abstract The specification describes a locking device for a control shaft of an adjustable component, the device com- prising a control knob on the shaft for rotating the shaft, a bushing mounted on the shaft between the knob and the component, a holding member threadedly engaged on the bushing and movable in a longitudinal direction with respect to the shaft toward and away from the knob, and a locking washer on the shaft between the holding member and the knob, the washer being movable in the longitudinal direction along the shaft and nonrotatable with respect to the rotatable holding member. The holding member is movable in the longitudinal direction between a first position in which the washer is in tight con- tact with the knob to lock the knob, and a second position in which the locking washer is out of contact with the knob to allow free movement of the knob and a plurality of positions between the first and second positions to provide a different amount of tightness of contact of the locking washer against the knob than in any of the other of the plurality of positions to vary the amount of drag desired on the knob and thereby enhance fine tuning adjustment of the component.
