ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An exercise bench is disclosed for use in association with barbell type weightlifting apparatus. The bench may be used for various different exercises, but it is primarily useful for the exercise which is known as the bench press. The exercise bench has a pair of downwardly opening, U-shaped rails defining legs, a horizontal seat portion, and a reclinable seat back. An upright standard is located on either side of and spaced from the seat back, thus defining a pair of spaced apart standards for supporting a barbell. An upper, U-shaped, upwardly opening, transverse member is releasably connected to the rails and to the standards to prevent side sway of the standards. A lower, U-shaped forwardly opening, transverse member is releasably connected to the foot of the rear legs and standards to prevent relative movement therebetween. The exercise bench is thus extremely sturdy and capable of supporting relatively high weights, although in knockdown form.
