ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention provides the enzyme L-2- hydroxy-4-methyl-pentanoic acid dehydrogenase and its production from Lactobacillus confusus. The enzyme can be used for the enzymatic conversion of L-2-hydroxy-4-methyl-pentanoic acid and of various other L-2-hydroxy carboxylic acids into the corresponding 2-ketocarboxylic acids and of 2-keto-4-methyl pen- tanoic acid and of various other 2-ketocarboxylic acids into the corresponding L-2-hydroxy carboxylic acids.
