2116960 9307064 PCTABS00021 The device (10) for the printing and dispensing of labels (16) sticking on a strip-shaped liner (14) of carrier material is provided with a printing means (46) which, in advancing direction of the liner, is arranged at a distance before a separation means (54) for separating an already printed label from the liner. For providing the liner with labels over the largest possible area on the liner surface, the labels are arranged on the liner relatively closely adjacent to each other. To make it possible that, after dispensing of one label, printing on the following label can start at the leading edge thereof, the liner is moved backwards after dispensing of one label until the front edge of the next label is positioned before or level with the printing means. This control sequence allows processing of liners in which the distance between adjacent labels is smaller than the distance between the printing means and the separation means. If the labels are arranged directly abutting each other, the position of the labels is detected by temporarily bending the liner within part of the transport path (34, 36). Thus, the gap between adjacent labels will widen and accordingly be detected by a light beam (40, 42).
