A B S T R A C T A surface containing encoded information bordered by bars where both the bars are the information contrast with a background is detected as to orientation and location and the information read by sampling the video scan output of a tele- vision camera which is designed to raster scan the image formed therein. The camera may be caused to scan with alternating rasters at an angle, preferably 90°, to one another while the orientation of the raster relative thereto is determined. The orientation of the raster scan may be rotated by electronic means, to provide the desired orientation of the raster relative to the information.
