Labeling Apparatus Abstract A method and apparatus for installing a tubular, flexible label to a product container such as a soft drink bottle, at a labeling station. The apparatus includes a pair of gripper assemblies secured to a reciprocal carriage; each gripper assembly includes a support frame, a cuff subassembly slidably mounted to the support frame for movement towards and away from an axis of a bottle located at the labeling station, and a clamping subassembly slidably mounted to the support frame for movement towards and away from a clamping surface defined by the cuff subassembly. At the com- mencement of a label applying stroke, the cuff subassem bly and clamp subassembly are maintained a spaced dis- tance apart to enable the gripper assembly to receive the lower region of a label to be applied. The cuff subassembly is then driven outwardly to uniformily ex- pand the lower region of the label until a gripper pad forming part of the clamped subassembly is engaged. The gripper assemblies are then driven downwardly in order the pull the label onto the bottle. The label is released by the gripper assemblies when the label reaches a predetermined position; the gripper assemblies then return to the label receiving position. The apparatus includes a cuff drive cam for maintaining an expanded position of the cuff subassemblies as the gripper assem- blies move past the bottle and a gripper release cam for releasing the label. A stabilizing cam follower, forming part of each gripper assembly, is engageable with a cam surface defined by the cuff release cams.
