4473 ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A population of thousands of hydrocarbons, liquids or gases can be traced from a point of sampling, and back to the originating source by employing combinations of labeling compounds in a base 2 or higher coding system to give Mn-1 possible codes where n is the number of labelers and M is a variable such as concentration, enabling any specific hydrocarbon thus sampled to have its provenance verified in terms of origin or quality; monitoring gasolines at motorist service station sites is a notable example of practice, but other hydrocarbon liquids and gases may be traced.
