ABSTRACT Compounds are provided for use as precursors in the preparation of antigens and conjugates to enzymes, the antigens being employed for the production of antibodies which are specific for a specific drug and/or its metabolites. The drugs of interest are cyclic compounds having a lactam functionality and disubstituted at an annular carbon atom adjacent the carbonyl of the lactam functionality. The compounds have a carbonyl functionality, either oxo-carbonyl or non-oxo-carbonyl (including nitrogen and sulfur analogs thereof) bonded to other than an annular carbon atom for conjugation to amino groups of proteins, antigens and enzymes, or other detector molecule.
