ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Hydrocarbyl lactone oxazolines respresented by the formula: Image wherein R is selected form the group consisting of hydrogen and alkyl radicals containing from 1 to 400 carbons atoms, X is selected from the group consisting of alkyl and hydroxy alkyl and Y is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, hydroxyl, sulfo, alkylthio, alkyldithio and a sulfur bridge containing 1 to 4 sulfur atoms, and their derivatives are useful additives in compositions, such as sludge dispersants for lubricating oil or anti-rust agents for gasoline.
