Abstract A step-ladder is disclosed in which at least one of the two legs, connected by a pivot at their upper ends, comprises transverse members constitut- ing treads carried on uprights and spaced from each other in the longitudinal direction of the uprights, the transverse members forming steps located in a horizontal plane when the said legs are spread to the maximal extent and the ladder is standing upon a horizontal surface. The steps are connected to the uprights in such a manner as to pivot about axes running parallel with each other, and to links running parallel with the uprights. The uprights and the links, when the legs are at their maximal distance apart, provide mutual support increasing the resistance to bending and limiting the extent to which the steps can pivot about their axes. The steps have an overhang, beyond the sides of the uprights remote from the other leg, which, when stepped upon, produces a torque tending to bring the links closer to the uprights. The depth of the steps, and the difference in height between two consecutive steps, is within the range commonly used for stairs.
