A guard which is mounted around a ladder in a swimming pool to prevent a randomly moving underwater pool cleaning head from becoming caught on the ladder is disclosed. The guard is comprised of screens which surround the ladder, extending outwardly from the ladder and towards the sidewall of the pool. The screens have a multiplicity of holes in them. When a pool cleaning head approaches the ladder it climbs on the guards and losing suction thereon, it falls off the guard onto the bottom of the pool where it resumes moving in a random direction.
