ABSTRACT A roof rack assembly that comprises at least two vertical supports disposed in a gutter extending about the periphery of the roof, means for coupling the supports to the gutter along opposite sides of the vehicle, an elongated cross member disposed within mating sockets in the supports and extending substantially transversely across the vehicle, suspending above the roof by the vertical supports, and means for coupling the cross member to at least one of the supports to prevent relative movement. An elongated channel extends longitudinally along the cross member, and an elongated opening to the channel with an elongated lip disposed adjacent the elongated opening are provided along an outer surface of the cross member. The coupling means is at least partially disposed within the elongated channel, with a portion extending outward from the outer surface of the cross member. 44102.APP
