23 ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A light-weight ladle lid cooperates with a lifting assembly positioned to remove the ladle lid as the ladle moves toward a filling location and to allow the lid to be drawn back down onto the ladle when the latter retraces its path. The assembly has ramp-like fingers which engage horizontal pins supported from the lid. The lid is hinged to the ladle by pins received in but disengage able from slots.
