ABSTRACT There is provided a slide gate nozzle, suitable for tapping molten steel from a steel ladle, which includes a feeder passageway which extends to an opening through a first plate, with a second plate juxtaposed against the first one and slidable with respect thereto. A collector passageway extends downstream from an opening in the second plate. The collector passageway has two substantially flat surfaces meeting to define an apex angle, and also a further surface opposed to the apex angle. The second plate is slidable with respect to the first plate along a path which substantially bisects the apex angle, and the passage- ways and plates are so located that, as the second plate and collector passageway move along the path in the direction in which the apex angle points, the feeder passageway is gradually closed by the further surface of the collector passageway. In a preferred embodiment, the collector passageway is triangular.
