ABSTRACT A thin laminar carbon member of selected porosity and gross density for use in diaphragms, electrodes, seals and the like and a method for making the same is described. A graphite felt is impregnated with a resinous hydrocarbon binder a portion of which is then squeezed out of the pores leaving only a thin coating on the felt fibres. After drying, the felt is compressed and heated to condense the resin and form a rigid carbon- aceous plate. The plate is then calcined to produce a partially impregnated carbon member having a gross density of 0.1-0.8 g/cm3, and a thickness of 0.1-0.5 mm, the ratio of the area to the thickness of the plate being at least 105.
