A method of expanding the number of pancreatic islet cells for transplantation. Fetal islet cells are cultured in the presence of laminin 5 extracellular matrix, resulting in a significant increase in cell number after passaging in culture. The expanded islet cells contain insulin and respond to glucose challenge.

L'invention concerne une mméthode pour assurer la multiplication des cellules des îlots pancréatiques en vue d'une transplantation. Des cellules d'îlots pancréatiques, provenant de foetus, sont cultivées en présence d'une matrice extracellulaire du laminine 5, ce qui permet d'augmenter, de manière significative, le nombre de cellules à chaque cycle de culture. Les cellules des îlots ainsi multipliées contiennent de l'insuline et réagissent à la présence de glucose.
