ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A lancet assembly for making a puncture in a finger includes a housing fabricated of flexible, disposable material. A spring including a first end defining a lancet is mounted in the housing in a stressed position. Upon release of the spring the lancet passes through an opening in the housing to strike a finger positioned against the housing. The lancet is then returned to within the housing by the natural resiliency of the spring. In a second embodiment of the lancet assembly the housing is reusable, and a disposable lancet cartridge is mounted on the housing. A cantilever spring is mounted in the housing and is cocked by a slide on the housing. Upon being released from the cocked position, the spring strikes a hammer member engaging an end of a lancet in the lancet cartridge. After puncturing a finger, the lancet is returned to a position with the cartridge by return springs. The cartridge is then removed from the lancet assembly and discarded. MS-1490
