A method increasing the capacity of existing landfill (100) to enable the disposal of additional ma- terial therein includes excavating (12) a given volume of material disposed in the exiting landfill (100), pos- sibly separating from the excavated material one or more components thereof, comminuting (44) the ex- cavated material sufficiently to permit its close packed disposal in a volume less than the given volume, and placing the comminuted material back into the land- fill.

L'invention concerne un procédé visant à augmenter la capacité d'une décharge existante (100) afin de pouvoir y déposer des matériaux supplémentaires, et qui consiste à creuser (12) la décharge existante (100) pour y prélever un volume donné des matériaux qui y ont été déposés, à séparer éventuellement un ou plusieurs composants de ces déblais, à pulvériser (44) suffisamment ces déblais pour pouvoir les évacuer sous une forme étroitement tassée dans un volume inférieur au volume donné, et à les replacer dans la décharge.
