A landing gear assembly (30) for supporting the forward end of a trailer when disconnected from a towing truck includes a mounting plate (32) for fixedly securing the landing gear assembly (30) to the trailer. A generally rectangular, tubular upper leg (34) is fixedly secured to the mounting plate (32) and extends longitudinally therefrom to an open end (38). A generally rectangular, tubular lower leg (44) is telescopingly received in the open end (38) and moveable between a retracted position recessed within the upper leg (34) and an extended position projecting from the open end (38) to a distal end (48). A foot (52) is pivotally attached to the distal end (48) of the lower leg (44) for supporting the trailer on a supporting surface (42). A one piece reinforcing ring (56) is deformed and expanded by a mandrel (64) and forced onto the open end (38) of the upper leg (34) to create a friction fit there between. The reinforcing ring (56) provides additional strength and resistance to lateral forces on the upper leg (34) when the lower leg (44) is in the extended position.
