Abstract of the Disclosure Novel lanthanum containing catalysts, and methods for their preparation are described having the general formula 0 - 0.3 M20 : La203 : 30 - 200 SiO2 in which M is a monovalent cation, preferably a mixture of sodium and ammonium. The catalysts may also contain small amounts of alumina, and can be supported on a conventional carrier. These catalysts find use in converting C1-C4 alcohols, particularly methanol, into olefins, up to and including the butenes. Known catalysts are generally inef- fective with methanol.
