An active matrix array for liquid crystal displays which provides for a large aperture ratio. A layer (10) of single crystal silicon is disposed over a glass substrate and etched and doped to form multiple source and drain regions (16) for an array of thin film transistors (TFTs). Multiple gate buses (14) are laid across the source and drain regions to form the TFTs. The drain regions each electrically contact a transparent electrode (18) used in switchting an individual pixel in a liquid crystal display. The TFTs formed do not encroach significantly into the pixel aperture and the conduction lines are constructed at minimal photolithographical requirements.

La présente invention concerne une structure de matrice active pour afficheur à cristaux liquides caractérisée par un grand diamètre de spot. Une couche (10) de silicium monocristallin est déposée sur un substrat de verre puis attaquée chimiquement et dopée pour constituer les différentes régions source et drain (16) d'une matrice de transistors à couches minces. La mise en place de différentes portes de bus réparties sur les régions source et drain permet de constituer les transistors à couches minces. Chaque région drain est en contact électrique avec une électrode transparente (18) assurant la commutation d'un seul pixel d'afficheur à cristaux liquides. Les transistors à couches minces ainsi réalisés n'occultent pas substantiellement les surfaces de spot des pixels, et les conducteurs sont réalisés au minimum des exigences de la photolithographie.
