ABSTRACT Disclosed i a large-area, high-sensitivity switch comprising a cover plate comparable in size to a human hand. The switch further comprise a base and bias apparatus for biasing the plate away from the base. The bias apparatus comprises a snap-action switch having a biased button which activates the switch when the button is depressed. The switch is positioned between the plate and the base so that movement of one of the plate or the base toward the other will activate the switch. A plurality of cover plate restraining apparatus allow one of the plate or the base to move toward the other and provide a rigid, permanent limitation on the distance by which the plate and the base can be separated. The plurality of cover plate restraining apparatus comprise apparatus for causing a leveraged depression of the button by a downward pressure on the plate at any location away from an axis orthogonal to the plate and in line with the button.
