A large current watchdog circuit for a photodetector (12), the circuit including a current sensing device (52) responsive to current flowing through the photodetector (12), and a variable impedance transistor (50) responsive to the current sensing device and the photodetector (12) which increases in resistance in response to current flowing through the photodetector (12) to protect the photodetector and any front end sensing electronics (16) from high current levels.

Le circuit anti-surintensité de la présente invention, qui est destiné à un photodétecteur (12), comporte, d'une part un détecteur de courant (52) sensible au courant dans le photodétecteur (12), et d'autre part un transistor à impédance variable (50). Ce transistor à impédance variable, qui réagit, non seulement au détecteur de courant, mais aussi à l'augmentation de résistance du photodétecteur (12) sous l'effet du passage du courant dans le photodétecteur (12), vise à le protéger contre certaines surintensités, lui et les circuits électroniques frontaux de détection (16).
