ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A machine having a very heavy drum mounted for rotation about the main, horizontal axis thereof, is subject to deformation of the bearing contact portions of the drum in a radial and longitudinal sense due to loads of self- weight and the weight of the working charge. These deformations are accommodated to by the provision of bearing shoes or of slipper bearings in which the stiffness of the bearing pad structure is matched with the deformation of the respective drum bearing contact portion so as to maintain predetermined limits of radial clearance between bearing surfaces of the shoe or slipper and drum bearing contact surface. The predetermined limit is generally restricted to the limiting film thickness of a dynamic lubricating film established in operation between the bearing shoe or slipper and its contact surface so as to maintain dynamic film lubrication and satisfactory load transfer between the drum support surfaces and its bearings.
