An 850 nm laser and/or amplifier comprises a single mode fluoro-zirconate optical fibre (20) doped with Er3+. CW op- eration of the normally self-terminating lasing transition 4S3/2 to 4I13/2 is achieved by applying excitation energy at 801 nm which both maintains a population inversion between the lasing levels and also populates the upper lasing level by a two- stage process of excitation to the 4I9/2 level from the 4I15/2 ground state and then to 2H9/2 level by ESA.

La transition laser entre les niveaux 4S3/2 et 4I13/2, qui normalement se termine d'elle-même, est entretenue par l'injection d'une énergie d'excitation à 801 nm, ce qui maintient l'inversion de population entre les niveaux laser et sert à peupler le niveau laser supérieur par le biais d'un processus d'excitation en deux étapes, la première produisant une transition entre le niveau fondamental 4I15/2 et le niveau 4I9/2, et la seconde, une transition entre ce dernier et le niveau 2H9/2.
