Abstract The present invention provides an apparatus for producing fibers composed of one of the group of substances including amorphous boron, single crystal silicon, polycrystal- line silicon, silicon carbide and silicon nitride comprising a laser, a reaction chamber and a supply of gaseous raw materials. The laser is focused at a point in the reaction chamber and the gaseous reactants combine to continuously form the fiber at that point.
