A semiconductor laser (10) has a distributed feedback laser section (12) and an amplifier section (14). The amplifier section (14) may be tapered to lower the optical power density particularly at an output facet (18) of the laser. The semiconductor laser (10) also includes a reflective element (24) that reflects light (17) from the distributed feedback laser section (12) to the amplifier section (14). The reflective element (24) folds the optical path (Op) of the light beam (17). Folding the optical path (Op) allows the amplifier section (14) area to be increased without enlarging the semiconductor die size. The larger amplifier section (14) will increase the output power of the laser. Likewise the reflective element (24) will allow the semiconductor die size to be reduced without decreasing the optical power of the laser.

La présente invention concerne un laser semi-conducteur comprenant une section de laser à rétroaction et une section d'amplificateur. La section d'amplificateur peut être de forme tronconique pour réduire la densité de puissance optique notamment au niveau d'une face de sortie du laser. Le laser semi-conducteur peut également comprendre un élément réfléchissant qui reflète la lumière en provenance de la section de laser à rétroaction vers la section d'amplificateur. L'élément réfléchissant fait replier le chemin optique du faisceau lumineux. Le repli du chemin optique permet l'accroissement de la section d'amplificateur sans nécessiter l'agrandissement de la taille du dé semi-conducteur. De manière similaire, l'élément réfléchissant permettra de réduire la taille du dé semi-conducteur sans diminuer la puissance optique du laser.
