ABSTRACT This invention relates to a method and apparatus for the measurement of the flow velocity of a fluid (especially B liquid) and particularly erythrocyte velocity in blood vessels. The single-frequency laser Doppler velocimeter of the invention comprises a lightway which is exclusively fibre-optic and therefore eliminates the proliferation of air-glass interfaces found in prior art apparatus. The fibre-optic lightway is a mono-fibre which operates bi-directionally and the Doppler-shifted beam is diverted from the main pathway by means of a fibre-optic tap which is preferably of the same material as the catheter probe. The mono-fibre is coupled to the laser by means of a low-loss wet mateable connector having a low backscattering coefficient. By coupling a low-power single-frequency laser with an all-fibre optical section, a number of significant advantages are realized The apparatus is electrically isolated from the patient and imparts minimal energy to the blood so that no damage to blood elements is possible. The use of mono-fibre optical path with a commensurately small catheter enables very small blood velocities in remote parts of the body to be successfully measured. The apparatus is rugged, compact and restively inexpensive by comparison with prior-art devices and is ideally suited to manufacture on a large-scale for use in clinical environments where low cost, reliability and accuracy are of special importance.
