The invention provides a composition having laser engraving properties, comprising a host material and an effective amount of a laser enhancing additive. The laser enhancing additive comprises a first quantity of least one of copper potassium iodide (CuKI3) or Copper Iodide (CuI), and a second quantity at least one substance selected from the group consisting of zinc sulfide (ZnS), barium sulfide (BaS), alkyl sulfonate, and thioester. The composition can be engraved with grayscale images by an Nd:Yag laser and can be added to laminates or coatings. The composition can be used during the manufacture of many articles of manufacture, including identification documents.

Cette invention a trait à une composition pour gravure au laser, composée d'un matériau hôte et d'une quantité efficace d'un produit d'addition augmentant les caractéristiques de fonctionnement du laser. Ce produit d'addition renferme une première quantité d'iodure de potassium de cuivre (CuKI¿3?) ou d'iodure de cuivre (CuI), au moins, ainsi qu'une seconde quantité d'au moins une substance choisie dans le groupe constitué par du sulfure de zinc (ZnS), du sulfure de baryum (BaS), du sulfonate d'alkyle et un thioester. Cette composition, qui permet d'effectuer une gravure à images achromatiques au moyen d'un laser à néodyme-YAG, peut être ajoutée à des stratifiés ou à des revêtements. Il est possible d'utiliser cette composition pour la fabrication de nombreux articles manufacturés, notamment des documents d'identification.
