A method for treating a metal surface subject to corrosion forms a protective alloy in the surface and subsurface of the metal by laser treatment of a precursor alloying material and the metallic substrate, also the apparatus and the treated surfaces which result. A method is disclosed for making a laser alloyed metal part smooth by post-treatment. The smooth laser alloyed metal part is also disclosed.
