SO-2-25069M/TJK/81 ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A laser knife in which the laser beam, once it has been used to cut a designated tissue, is prevented from damaging surrounding tissues beyond the designated tissue. A receiving dish is mounted to the end portion of the laser knife through which the laser beam emerges. The receiving dish has a downward- } curved portion which holds a liquid therein. Liquid is supplied into the downwardly curved portion through a supply of liquid such as a normal saline solution through a hollow portion formed in the receiving dish. The laser beam when it strikes the down- wardly curved portion of the receiving dish evaporates the liquid contained therein so that the heat of the laser beam is dissipated as the heat of vaporization of the liquid so that the temperature of the tissue is not significantly raised.
