Abstract of the Disclosure A scanning and printing system scans and digitizes graphical information for recording on magnetic tape and also prints graphical information previously stored in digital form on a magnetic tape. Scanning and printing is accomplished by directing a laser beam through a pinhole in an aperture plate and thence through a set of optics, which collimate the beam and scan it across the surface of a graphic medium. For operation as a printer the laser beam is addressed by an accousto-optic modulator, which is positioned between the laser and the aperture plate. The accousto-optic modulator causes a shifting of the laser beam in accordance with digitized data trains representing positive and negative areas in an image to be reproduced. The laser beam is normally blanked out by the aperture plate and is periodically shifted by the accousto-optic modulator for direction through the pinhole. The graphic medium is mounted on a semi-cylindrical platen and is scanned by a rotating lens system. A stepping motor shifts the platen a distance equal to the width of one scanning line after each rotation of the scanning optics. For use as a printer the graphic medium may be a sheet of photographic film, and a cover is provided in order to prevent exposure of the film to ambient light. For use as a scanner there is provided an optical arrangement for collecting laser light reflected from the graphic medium, upon which an original image is printed. The light which is so reflected is directed toward a light sensing device such as a photodiode or photomultiplier. The light sensing device responds only to diffuse light reflected from the graphic medium specular light being filtered out by the optical system. Filtering of the specular light is accomplished by directing the laser beam through a quarter wave plate to cause circular polarization of the light incident upon the graphic medium. The light which is reflected from the graphic medium is directed back through the quarter wave plate and thence through a polarized filter. The specular light reflected from the graphic medium remains circularly polarized and is converted by the quarter wave plate into linearly polarized light having a predetermined direction of polarization. The polarizing filter rejects all light polarized in this direction, and therefore only light which is diffusely reflected from the graphic medium is transmitted to the photosensing device. Electrical circuitry is provided for digitizing. processing and recording the signals generated by the photosensing device.
