Abstract of the Disclosure Disclosed is a masking apparatus for use in laser reprofiling of corneal tissue. The masking apparatus comprises a support structure, which can be affixed upon a cornea, and a mask connected to the support structure and disposed above the cornea. The mask includes a light restriction element, which may be an iris or a series of apertures in a rotatable plate, and a control element for regulating laser impingement on the corneal tissue. In operation, the light restriction element is adjusted to regulate the radiant energy incident upon the cornea. The apparatus accordingly provides a method for the selective photoablation of the cornea.
